Chapter 6: Two Sons
Evelyn POV
Kieran and I were still asleep with Adam still in my arms and returned to the warehouse. Now there was a more dangerous darkness. I could have sworn that my heart was racing like a madwoman.
"Damien!" Kieran called out. His voice resonated on the metal walls. "Damien, can you hear me?"
There was no answer. Only silence and shadows and the breathing out of myself. I had Adrian even tighter, and I feared that, had I released him, I should have lost a full other thing.
"Victor!" Kieran shouted. "Let the boy go! You and I can settle this. Just you and me. Man to man."
Somewhere deep in the warehouse someone made a laugh. It was the laugh of Victor but now it had a different sound. It was pitiable and meant the whim of a trapped animal which was ready to mash everything that was in its way.
You believe you are the boss here? Victor called out. You suppose you know what to do with me? I have your son, Kieran. Your real son. The one who looks like you. I was born to be an Alpha one.
My hands clenched into fists. This man had taken so much. His father Kieran had been poisoned by him. He had enabled Serena to destroy my life. And now he was like holding a child of five years of age as if his life was not worth a thing.
"Where is he?" I shouted. My voice surprised me. It was strong. I was angry. "Where is my son?"
There was a pause. Then again there was the voice of Victor. "Ah, the mother. The helpless woman who allowed her child to be taken away. You have no power here, Luna. You never did."
"I'm not a Luna anymore," I said. I made a step out into the shadows. Kieran took hold of my shoulder, and I jerked away. "I'm something worse. I am a mother who is guarding her baby. And I will destroy you."
It was now time to get my eyes to the dark. I was able to identify forms and shadows. And then I saw him. It has a little person, and he sits in an old chair, and is bound with a rope. Damien.
He looked just like Kieran. The same dark hair. The same sharp features. But his eyes were so sad. So frightened. He was aloof and chilled the entire life led with a father who had not learned to love. And here he was now alone in the dark with a man who needed to use him.
"Damien," I said softly. I went to him, and Adrian was sleeping somewhere safe behind some boxes. "My name is Evelyn. I'm--" I paused. How do you explain to a child who you remain to be his mother that you only met him? Five years of separation and lies and pain. How do you explain it?
Listen to her, don’t listen to her, Victor said. He came out round Damien and carried a gun. This was aimed this time at the head of Damien. "The boy knows who he is. He's a Blackwood. He's an Alpha. He doesn't need a mother. He has me now."
Damien's eyes looked at me. Young, so puzzled were they. There was a look about him that he would have liked to say something, but he had lost his voice through fear.
Kieran stepped forward. "Victor, this is over. The police are coming. They have already been called by my men. You can't win this."
"I don't need to win," Victor said. His grin was that inhuman grin of his. I only have to ensure that you lose. I only need to ensure that this boy does not grow to be the Alpha that you wanted him to be.
Victor pulled the trigger.
The explosion was so intense it was as though the entire world was blowing up. I screamed. But Damien fell forward--not by being shot, but his chair overturned. Victor had missed on purpose. He was playing with us. He was enjoying our fear.
Kieran screeched, and transformed himself with a roar into a wolf. He was so quick, so fierce and a blur of fur and teeth and claws. Victor removed the bullet once more, but Kieran had moved. The bullet missed.
They crashed together. Victor dropped the gun. They were rolling over the earth and like two animals they fought like meats and bit and ripped and tearing everything around.
I ran to Damien. I unrigged the ropes as quick as possible. This made my fingers shake to the point where I could hardly move the knots. "It's okay," I said. "It's okay, baby. I've got you."
Damien was crying now. There was actual water streaming down his face. Worst of all he was letting himself feel, the first time in his short life. He was allowing himself to be frightened and despondent and human.
I knew you would come, Damien, said. His small voice was so broken. "I knew Adrian needed me. I felt it in my heart. I thought my brother had gotten into trouble.
"You're so brave," I said. I drew him to me and kissed him on the head. "You're so brave, Damien. But thank you, coming to save Adrian.
Kieran and Victor were continuing their fight in the background. Victor was now pouring with blood. The previous knife injuries were worsening. He was getting weaker. But he himself was becoming more mean and desperate.
Victor abruptly escaped out of the wolf body of Kieran. He fled as far back into the warehouse as he could. "This isn't over!" he shouted. "This will never be over!"
He melted back into the dark. Kieran attempted to follow, but he had a bad limp. His wounds were too deep. He needed help.
I glanced in Damien's direction, and then out of the direction Kieran had vanished. In the corner was slumbering Adrian. Damien was in my arms. Kieran was hurt and alone.
I had to choose. I needed to make a choice on who to assist first.
But then I heard another thing. It was a sound I didn't expect. Her voice was that of Serena, who called out into the deeper end of the warehouse. And she was not making an appeal. She was laughing.
"Victor?" she called. "Victor, wait for me!"
My blood went cold. Serena was here. She had come with Victor. And that meant there was a reason. That meant she was part of this plan.
The warehouse suddenly went completely black. Every light that had been on went off. Someone had cut the power. And in the darkness, I could hear footsteps. Multiple footsteps. Multiple voices.
We weren't alone anymore. There were more people in the warehouse. More enemies. More danger.
"Evelyn!" Kieran's voice came from somewhere in the dark. He was panicking. He couldn't see. His wolf was confused. "Where are you? Hold onto Damien and Adrian!"
I pulled Damien closer and moved toward the corner where Adrian was sleeping. But I stopped. I heard a sound. The sound of a gun being loaded. The sound of many guns being loaded.
And then Serena's voice came through the darkness, cruel and sharp.
"You thought this was just about Victor and Adrian? You thought this was just about me? Oh, Evelyn. You're so stupid. This has always been about power. This has always been about taking everything from the Blackwood Pack. And now that you're all here, together, helpless in the dark--it all finally begins."
