Chapter Break up

Nydia’s POV

“You jerk! What nonsense are you spouting?” Frank shouted, stepping forward to hit me again.

I smirked coldly, pulling out the scalpel hidden in my sleeve. Everyone in the room froze in shock.

Eileen screamed, “Nydia, what are you doing?”

I stared at Frank, curling my lip slightly. “If you dare hit me, I’ll dare to stab this knife into Olive’s heart.”

“You!” Frank was furious, but he stopped in his tracks. Still, he kept muttering, “Crazy! You’re insane!”

I raised an eyebrow and said lazily, “If you know I’m crazy, then don’t mess with me.”

I couldn’t stand being here for another second.

As I turned to leave, Eileen whispered, “Nydia, it’s not what you think between Olive and Gordon.”

“Exactly. People with a dirty heart see everything as dirty,” Frank snapped, still fuming. “Gordon was just looking after Olive because she wasn’t feeling well. He was doing it for you!”

Gordon looked hurt. “Nydia, I took care of Olive for whose sake? How can you still be so petty about this?”

“OK, I won’t be petty over you anymore.”

Gordon looked surprised and delighted. “Are you serious? Nydia, are you finally willing to understand me?”

“No, I’ve decided I don’t want you anymore.”

If I don’t care, I won’t be petty.

In this relationship between Gordon and me, I’m the only one who still cares, so I’m the only one in pain.

I’ve decided to let him go and free myself too.

“Are you serious?” he asked.

I didn’t avoid his gaze and nodded firmly.

“You’re still throwing a tantrum. You keep making a fuss over this. When will you stop?” he yelled, losing patience. “All this talk, and you’re still misunderstanding me and Olive!”

“Nydia, do you even have a conscience? You caused Olive’s father’s death. You’re the one who should be making it up to her. Now I’m doing it for you, and you still have the nerve to misunderstand me? You even dare to talk about breaking up?”

“Misunderstanding, misunderstanding. It’s always ‘misunderstanding’ with you, Gordon. Have you ever counted how many times you’ve said that to me?”

I didn’t want to get angry. Deep down, I knew they weren’t worth it.

But in a situation like this, my emotions still took over.

Gordon’s face turned slightly uneasy. Maybe he realized he’d been saying that a lot lately.

His tone softened a bit. “But you really did misunderstand me and Olive. I can explain everything to you.”

I said calmly, “Whether it’s a misunderstanding or not, you know the truth better than anyone.”

“Nydia! You’re throwing a tantrum again!” Gordon rubbed his forehead. “You’re not a kid anymore. Stop being so stubborn and just listen to my explanation, okay?”

“Your explanation means nothing to me anymore,” I said, word by word. “Gordon, I’ve said it—we’re done.”

“Done? What do you mean? You’re breaking up?” Frank was stunned, clearly not expecting me to actually let go.

Eileen also looked confused. “Didn’t Gordon propose to you successfully? Are you backing out?”

Seeing they genuinely didn’t know about this, I tilted my head toward Gordon with a calm smirk.

A trace of embarrassment appeared on Gordon’s face.

I got it. Looks like he hadn’t told them.

“Then let me say it,” I chuckled lightly. “Yesterday, in the middle of Gordon’s proposal, he got a call from your precious daughter Olive and ran off to take care of her. The proposal never even happened.”

“It’s just a ceremony, Nydia. Our relationship is so strong. Don’t be petty,” Gordon warned in a low voice. “If you want to throw a tantrum, there’s a limit. Think about whether you can handle the consequences.”

“I’m not throwing a tantrum. I’m very clear-headed, and I’m not getting back together,” I said, looking at the man I’d loved for years. I took a deep breath and said firmly, “I made it clear yesterday. When you left, our relationship ended.”

Gordon snapped irritably, “No, I don’t agree! You’re just saying this out of anger. You’re mad that I left you yesterday!”

“Fine, I’ll make it up to you. I’ll arrange another proposal ceremony. Just stop being so stubborn, okay?”

He said this as if he was compromising, but his expression was full of impatience.

In his mind, everything I was doing was just to get a ceremony out of him.

So, he thought giving me one was some huge favor.

I gave a bitter smile.

All these years of giving in and tolerating him didn’t earn me his gratitude.

Instead, in his eyes, I became a woman who could be easily satisfied with cheap gestures.

I ignored Gordon and turned to Frank and Eileen. “Anyway, it’s over between me and Gordon. I won’t be at the engagement party, and I’m not marrying him.”

“Ridiculous!” Frank was livid, roaring, “The Meyer family and the Sullivan family have been allies for years. Your marriage to Gordon was decided long ago. Who do you think you are? You’re nothing! You saying you won’t marry means nothing!”

“If I say I won’t marry, then I won’t!” I met his gaze coldly. “Who do you think you are? What are you worth? As long as I don’t want to marry, no one can force me. Go ahead and try if you think you have the power to control me!”

“You! You’re out of control!” Frank raised his hand again.

I slowly twirled the scalpel in my hand.

Eileen stopped Frank and spoke to me gently, “Nydia, don’t say things in anger. Everyone knows you love Gordon. If you don’t marry him, what will happen to Gordon? What about the alliance between our families?”

“The Meyer family doesn’t just have one daughter,” I said, glancing at Olive nearby. “Gordon can marry your other daughter.”

Gordon looked at me with a pained tone. “Nydia, you know I’ve always loved you.”

“I don’t love you anymore,” I said. “If you don’t want to marry Olive, you can always marry Mr. Frank.”

Frank shouted, “Disrespectful child! Disrespectful!”

I winked at him, gesturing for him to calm down. “Mr. Frank, for the sake of the Meyer family, are you really unwilling to make even this small sacrifice?”

“You!”

“Haha.” I suddenly pictured Frank and Gordon getting married and couldn’t help but laugh as I waved at them. “Think carefully about my sincere suggestion.”

With that, I turned to leave. Gordon called after me, his footsteps chasing behind.

“Gordon!” Eileen suddenly shouted, “Olive fainted!”

I paused, turning back. As expected, I saw Gordon rushing to Olive’s side.

“Are you okay?” he asked, holding her with concern.

Olive frowned, saying in pain, “My heart suddenly hurts a lot. I don’t know if it’s from the car accident…”

I knew Olive’s acting was terrible. Olive knew it too. Maybe everyone else knew it as well.

But they chose to believe her. They chose to favor her.
