Chapter 1 - Trust

Three Months Later

Sienna's P.O.V.

The first month after my parents were killed, everyone was so stunned I was their alpha that things were calm for the most part. Once I started making changes and speaking to those I didn't feel I could trust, the calmness switched to anger. Now, people walk around and look at me warily. I want them to be afraid. I’m not as weak as they have always assumed.

"Sienna, I overheard a few pack members discussing going to the king to see what he will do for them if they kill you." I turn from my office window and look at Diego. He's the lead warrior and the only person I trust entirely. He grew up with my mom, was loyal to her, and has always been like an uncle to me. He's huge with black hair, black eyes, and covered in tattoos.

"Do you think they will actually try something?" I ask him as I sit down at my desk. Mom had been preparing me to take over for years, but the hole in my heart from losing her and Dad is still there. Sometimes, I feel like I can't breathe from the grief, but I don't show it. I refuse to let the pack see any weakness in me.

"I don't know. They're omega's, so it could be just talk. I'll keep an eye on them. How are you holding up?" He sits across from me, and I sigh.

"Honestly, I don't know. I'm scared that King Harlan is going to come for me at any time. I'm scared that one of my own pack members will try to kill me. Most of all, I'm afraid I will let my mom and dad down. What if I'm not the one who's meant to eliminate the King like they thought?" Diego reaches over and pats my hand. His daughter, Alisa, is a couple of years older than me, and we’re friends, but she mated to a wolf in another pack. His mate, Robin, has been my shoulder to cry on these last few months.

"King Harlan may come, but we'll be ready for him. We will not let any of his assassins get to you. I know that's hard to believe after they just killed your parents, but your mom wanted us to save all of our secret weapons to protect you. The pack is scared because they know you're different. Not only do you have Alpha skills, but you're strong as hell, and can fight against me or any of my men. You're also smart and can see through the people lying to your face. You’re the Alpha of the Silver Lunar Pack. The last remaining female Alpha. You will not disappoint anyone because, Sienna, everyone knows you're the only one who can defeat the King." This is why I love this man. He knows exactly what I need to hear.

"Thanks, Diego. Let me know if you hear anything from those omegas. If they seem serious, put them in the dungeons. I want everyone to know I mean what I say." Diego pats my hand again and stands.

"Will do, Alpha." After he leaves, I feel better.

"We need our mate. He will make us even stronger." My wolf Rieka mindlinks me. She is a snow-white wolf with teal eyes. She had been adamant since I turned eighteen that we need our mate, but that has been the furthest thing from my mind.

"You know there's a chance he'll reject us. Some men won't like being the beta to a female alpha. Why go through that pain if we don't have to?" I reply.

"We won't know until we find him. Just promise me you'll give him a chance if we meet him." I groan, and she chuckles. She knows I'm about to give in.

"Fine, but if he's an asshole, I'll throw him in the dungeons or kill him. I'm done with backstabbing bastards. We already have enough of them in the pack." I hope she's right, but if she's not, he's not worth my time.

King Harlan's P.O.V.

I can't believe that bitch tricked me. I had it all planned out to kill her before her daughter was old enough to take over. I run my hands through my black hair in frustration.

I have been the King for forty years. My dad was killed by a female Alpha when he did a pack visit and tried to force her to have sex with him. She refused, but he was the King, and no one was allowed to refuse the King. When he persisted, she shifted into her wolf, and before he had time to shift, she killed him. I had her brought to me, and I killed her myself, but before I did, she gave me a warning. She said that one day, a female Alpha would come along and be so powerful that she would bring the entire kingdom to its knees. I have set out to kill all female Alphas since that day.

I look out the window and see my incompetent son, Drakon, walking in the gardens below. He doesn't like what I'm doing and has even tried to stop me, but I refuse. He's not competent to be the next King. We're supposed to be ruthless and take what we want.

"What's your plan for the Alpha of Silver Lunar?" My mate, Silvia, walks over and looks down at our son. She has the same mindset as me. We're royals and can do whatever the hell we want.

"I'm sending out our secret weapon. I think he's ready." I've been training this assassin since he was dropped off at the palace when he was a pup. He has been locked in a cage and is not allowed to interact with anyone other than the assassins training him. He has not been shown any kindness and has been beaten many times, almost to death. He's huge, even bigger than me, and meaner than anyone I've ever met. He’s the perfect one to kill Sienna. His name is Maverick.
