Chapter 2

Scarlett POV

When I got to class, my best friend Becky was nowhere to be found. I was surprised because she’s an early bird so her being late was an unusual thing to me. I quickly linked her as I sat beside her empty desk.

“Becky, where are you?”

“Scarlett! Wait for me, I will be in school soon. I have double-barreled announcements for you.” She linked back.

I purred with excitement, “Can’t you tell me now?”

“Tsk! Always so impatient.” She growled, “Wait for me, I want to see the look on your face when I break the news to you.” She replied.

I got giddy after what she said. Becky’s brother was part of the search team for the lost prince. It had been 18 years since he disappeared but the king didn’t give up on the search for him. I’m sure the king and I are the only ones who believe he’s still alive.

The king is his father so if he believes his pup is still alive then he is. Every year he adds new members to the search team to try and locate the missing prince. This year Becky’s brother was recruited to the team and knowing my obsession with the prince Becky never stopped giving me endless updates.

As I sat at my desk waiting for her, her sweet scent filled my nose, yes! My wolf and I rejoiced, waiting patiently for her to join us. She appeared at the back door of the classroom and hurried to sit by my side.

She was panting, which was unlike her. Now I was curious to know where she had been.

“I went to the pack house today.” She broke the news to me and my eyes went wide with surprise.

“Did you go to meet the prince before me?” I jealously asked.

She shook her head and giggled, “Not at all. But there’s a new update about him”

I held my breath and paid rapt attention to what she was about to say, like my life depended on it, because yes, the survival of my love life depends on this.

“Finally, the search team picked up his smell in a small town. I didn’t ask which town it was but I learned that it’s far away from here.” She said,

I gasped and shifted to the edge of my chair, hoping that she had more to say.

“They traced his scent and it led them down a path but then it stopped midway so they couldn’t get anything substantial, so they marked that route, and will be hovering around hoping that he will pass by again.” She said,

“Is that all?” I asked slightly disappointed. The news about being able to smell the prince in itself was great but I had hoped for more.

“Why are you disappointed?” Becky asked sternly, “For many years we couldn’t smell the prince and thought he had passed, shouldn’t you be happy that all hope is not lost after all?”

“I am happy, but it’s just that I was hoping for more.” I muttered, “Anyway. What’s the other thing you wanted to tell me about?”

She folded her arms and pouted, “If you’re not happy about this, then you won’t be happy about that too.” She said,

“Come on, just tell me,” I begged.

She tilted her body and looked at me, her eyes dancing with so much glee they started to shift,

“I found my mate!” She announced as quietly as she could but I know the rest of the class wasn’t listening else they would have heard us.

I should’ve been happy for her but I felt so down and alone and it’s not because I was jealous of my friend, far from that. Have you heard of the saying misery loves company? That was exactly how I felt.

I hadn’t got a mate and Becky didn’t have one either, we were two peas in a pod, birds of a feather. I wasn’t alone in my situation. She was right there with me, that was until today.

She pulled the collar of her shirt aside and showed me a mark on her shoulder, “he marked me. I can’t believe he found me right before my graduation from high school. We’ve even planned on attending prom together.”

I tried to force a smile but it wasn’t working. Becky and I promised to be each other’s prom date, so what was I going to do now?

“Good…Good for you.”

“You’re not happy right?” She said to me and I shook my head, “I’m glad you’ve found your mate, I’m just thinking about who is going to be my date since you have a date now.”

She sighed, “Why don’t you go with Dylan? He already wanted you to be his date.” She suggested.

Dylan had a mate who was my cousin, she had warned me to stay away from her mate when in truth, it was her mate that couldn’t stay away from me. I didn’t want any drama that was why I turned him down and Becky knew it but she had a mate now so she was finding a way to get rid of me.

But that’s how she-wolf friendships are sometimes. We had a big girl group till they all found their mates and suddenly they couldn’t hang out anymore. Everything was about their mates, but I didn’t see this betrayal coming from Becky. I thought she was different.

“Sure,” I smiled. “I will go with Dylan. His mate doesn’t need to know.”

“But of course, she’ll know,” Becky replied.

“Never mind, I will go alone or I won’t go at all.”

I expected Becky to feel bad and change her mind when I said that but she only nodded and said sorry.

I purred sadly on my way back home that day, I was all alone in the world. Everyone had a mate except me.

“I’m all alone, if you haven’t forgotten about me, can you please tell my mate that I’m still waiting? I just want him to come and find me.”

I whispered while looking through my window that night wishing on the moon.
