Chapter 7: Shadows on the Board

The following week was one of the most frenetic for Amelia. Each day brought new developments in her plan—but also new challenges. Her alliance with Carlos was already bearing fruit: the documents he had sent were a goldmine. They included records of suspicious transfers, financial movements between offshore accounts, and contracts signed by Diego under false names. Though the information was valuable, it still needed to be organized and verified before it could become a true weapon. The weight of what she held in her hands was immense—these papers could destroy Diego's empire, but they could just as easily destroy her if mishandled. Every signature, every transaction was a potential thread she could pull to unravel his entire world, but pulling the wrong one could alert him to her plans prematurely.

That morning, Amelia decided to meet again with Laura and Eduardo. They had agreed to gather in a small private office Laura used as a personal refuge, far from any connection to Diego's business world.

—These are the documents Carlos sent me —Amelia said, placing a thick folder on the table. —Here's proof that Diego has been moving money illegally for years.

Laura took the folder and began carefully reviewing the papers.

—This is impressive. If we present this correctly, he could face serious legal trouble. But we need to verify everything. One mistake, and Diego will use it against us.

Eduardo, who had remained silent until then, nodded.

—I have contacts who can help authenticate these documents. But it'll be a slow process. And we'll need to be discreet. If Diego finds out we're digging into his finances, he'll react immediately.

—I understand —Amelia replied firmly. —But we can't just sit and wait. While we work on this, we need to keep pushing forward in other areas.

Laura looked up, an idea forming in her mind.

—Amelia, you mentioned wanting to infiltrate Diego's business circles, right?

—Yes. I need to get close to him—understand his movements better and, if possible, sow distrust among his associates.

—I know of an event that could be your opportunity. Next week, there's a charity gala hosted by one of Diego's closest partners. He'll be there, along with many of the people he does business with. It could be the perfect place to start.

Amelia frowned, considering the proposal.

—Do you think I can get in without raising suspicion?

Laura smiled with a mix of confidence and cunning.

—Leave that to me. I know the organizer, and I can get you an invitation. The important thing is that you go prepared. You'll need to blend in and not give any hint of your intentions.

—Then it's settled. Make it happen. I'll be ready when the time comes —Amelia replied, feeling adrenaline begin to course through her.

The following days were spent preparing. Amelia worked on perfecting her act, rehearsing how to behave in a room full of corrupt businessmen and Diego's associates. Laura provided her with information on key attendees, giving her an idea of who to engage with and who to avoid.

When the night of the gala arrived, Amelia was ready. She wore an elegant black dress that exuded sobriety and sophistication—nothing too flashy to draw unwanted attention. Laura accompanied her to the entrance, ensuring she got in without issue.

—Remember, stay calm and observe everything. You don't need to act tonight—just gather information —Laura whispered before leaving.

Amelia nodded and stepped through the doors of the lavish ballroom. The space was lit by grand chandeliers, and a live orchestra played softly in the background. Conversations filled the air as impeccably dressed waiters offered champagne to the guests.

Amelia moved with confidence, greeting attendees with a polite smile. Though she didn't know most of them, her poise allowed her to blend in effortlessly.

As she made her way through the room, she spotted Diego on the other side, surrounded by a group of men and women laughing at his remarks. Seeing him there—so self-assured—stirred a mix of rage and determination in Amelia. But she held back. Tonight wasn't about confrontation. It was about learning.

She approached a small group discussing tech investments, feigning interest in their conversation. One of the men, a businessman named Joaquín Leiva, noticed her and offered a friendly smile.

—I don't recall seeing you at these events before. Are you new to the circle? —Joaquín asked curiously.

—I am. Amelia Martínez. I work in corporate consulting and was recently invited. A pleasure to meet you all —Amelia replied smoothly.

Joaquín seemed impressed and invited her into the discussion. Amelia seized the opportunity, listening intently and mentally noting every detail, observing the dynamics between the guests.

As the night progressed, she identified Diego's most influential partners—as well as those who seemed less loyal. She also picked up information on some of Diego's current projects, confirming details Carlos had provided.

By the time the gala neared its end, Amelia discreetly made her exit. She had accomplished her goal: gathering valuable intel without raising suspicion. As she left the ballroom, she couldn't resist one last glance at Diego. He hadn't noticed her all night, but Amelia knew that anonymity wouldn't last forever.

Back in her apartment, she sat with her notebook and began documenting everything she'd learned. Every detail, no matter how small, was another piece of the puzzle. She also listed key contacts to approach later, prioritizing those who might be more vulnerable to her influence.

Reviewing her notes, she reflected on the small victories she'd accumulated so far. There was still much to do, but the foundation was set. For the first time in years, Amelia felt in control of her fate. That night, she slept with the certainty that—no matter how powerful the enemy—she was meant to win this battle.

Yet, in the silence of the night, one thought stole her rest: What if Diego discovers her moves too soon? The key wasn't just strategy—it was unpredictability. Determined, she grabbed her notebook and began sketching new contingencies. Her greatest weapon would be staying one step ahead.
