Chapter 31
When we arrived at the ceremony place, Gerry and I immediately got out of our car and entered the big house where the event was held.
And again my nervousness made me uneasy in this situation. I wasn't afraid of making a mistake in front of them, but I was afraid of making a mistake that would make myself a hassle because surely after this there would be a confrontation between us and them.
"Calm down, everything will be fine," Gerry said, holding my hand.
I smiled at that and hoped for a better grip on Gerry's hand. At times like this Gerry always gave me encouragement and was always beside me, a far cry from the previous Gerry. This really made me comfortable and more confident that my relationship with Gerry would go well.
As long as my jinx doesn't interfere here.
Gerry and I walked into the big house and of course there were lots of people gathered there. They were all wearing fancy clothes because the theme of the dinner this time was fancy and elegant, all of them looked beautiful and elegant and handsome with their clothes and their appearance.
I didn't see the slightest look of poverty or hardship there, it was clear that all of them who were present there were people who had hundreds of millions of dollars in wealth and even much more.
When looking at the reality of my social status with them, it's like looking at a dystopia that is in stark contrast. It's like seeing the abyss and the sky so high up there.
"They are nothing compared to you, don't always underestimate yourself just because of one or two things. Look at all of them, they are like humans who have no conscience. Their gaze is only always to judge and assess, not to welcome and accept. They are humans who don't have one precious treasure given to them by God," Gerry said.
"Hm? Precious treasure? What is it?" I asked.
"Kindness, they don't have it because in their brains there is only competition and hostility. It's a far cry from you who still have humanity and are much better than them. Even those you see today wouldn't hesitate to kill others if they wanted to and they're happy about it," Gerry said.
Gerry tightened his grip on me. "And before I met you I was just like them. Not much different and almost exactly the same, I even had to laugh because I was satirizing myself with what I just said."
I was stunned and swallowed my saliva, I just remembered the obvious fact that Gerry was a notorious and cold mobster. It's no wonder that he said so because his past is also filled with blood and rivalry, but I really salute his willingness to change his attitude even though I don't know if he's still like that in his work world or not.
All of them who were there immediately looked at me. I wasn't proud of the stares because I knew what they meant, they must have been assessing my social status and my life background. Even though I had never met them in person, there must have been news that spread to them by word of mouth about my relationship with Gerry who had become a couple.
They must have looked down on me and been cynical about me because I, a poor, ordinary guy, was dating Gerry who was the son of the biggest mafia boss in the country.
"It's been a long time since I've seen you Gerry, it's great to see you on this pleasant occasion. We've done a lot of work together both in business and... Yeah you know our other jobs," said a man.
"Thank you Toni, I'm very happy that we can meet again after a long time of not communicating with each other because of our respective busy schedules," Gerry replied with a smiling face.
It's unusual for Gerry to show this kind of face, maybe he's trying to provide a comfortable place for me because if he shows his usual expression then it will look that this place is an uncomfortable place.
So really willing to do anything for me.
"Oh right. And speaking of that how about your arranged marriage with the girl from Norine's family? Aren't you guys already at the engagement stage and you should be getting married soon?"
The smile on Gerry's face faded instantly hearing that question from Toni, even Gerry did not hesitate to show that change in his face so quickly and drastically that it really clearly showed that he was not happy with Toni's words.
"Don't you see who I'm holding right now? I do not wish to discuss any woman from that family or any other family. Are you deliberately trying to provoke a conversation like this?" Gerry said emotionally.
I hurriedly calmed myself down by stroking his shoulder and whispering soft words. I didn't want a fight to start this quickly just because of trivial things like earlier.
It was true what Gerry said about the nature of the people there. Even someone with a face as long as Tommy's could have said something like that and that was the beginning of the beginning for all of this.
"Relax friend, don't rush to get emotional. I didn't mean to lead you into anything you don't like but I didn't know about that. I thought this person beside you was your aide or your errand boy," Toni said.
It was a taunt.
And I understood and knew what it meant.
I took it casually and there was no significant change of expression on my face, I didn't want to look depressed or cornered by the sarcasm and ridicule from the people there. I was used to it even before I knew Gerry, so why would I be sad just because of trivial things like just now?
"Oh! Hahaha, you're not quite right. But the truth is that I'm also taking care of Gerry, I'm guarding his heart from bad women who only want his money," I said to break the ice.
Instantly, the women around us glanced at me with sharp glances. They must have been very insinuated by my words just now and I didn't care about that. Because I was sure that even if I didn't do that, they still didn't like me, and if anyone felt angry with my words, it meant that they felt that they were in accordance with what I said.
I glanced out of the corner of my eye and I saw a smile etched on Gerry's face. He must have been so proud that I confidently stood up to the people who were trying to corner me.
"Oh, haha. You have a good sense of humor too. Look at Gerry, you should emulate your partner because he has a good sense of humor. He must be the comedian you brought over to your house, right?" Toni said.
Suddenly there were a few other people who came closer to us too, they also joined in and responded to Toni's words. The place of their words was of course not much different from the sarcasm that Toni conveyed to me.
I didn't understand why they did that to me because there was nothing in it for them physically but I was sure it was their psychological satisfaction to do those things to people who they considered weaker than them.
"Good joke, I'm reminded of how Toni's father picked up the mop that was on the floor of my house when I was little. Also Miranda was the first to eat stale cheese when her parents had just opened their first drug cartel. They were as memorable and funny as the jokes Zharies told when we were at home, but of course my girlfriend never fed me stale cheese and I never asked her to pick up the mop on my floor," said Gerry.
All the people there were silent. Even I myself was speechless after hearing Gerry's words, I could feel the power possessed by Gerry who was a person who was 'born to be rich and become rich'.
Those who were there slowly retreated and returned to looking friendly hiding their true nature from us. I could only sigh tiredly as the situation here was really unpleasant.
Maybe I'll be more appetizing if I eat at another restaurant after returning from this place rather than having to eat here.
"Look, they're not much better than you, in fact, they're worse and worse. So you don't need to feel inferior and discouraged just because you see their fake status," Gerry said.
I nodded in understanding and smiled then I casually stepped beside Gerry without feeling afraid and nervous anymore.
"You finally came."
That voice, the voice of a woman who really raised my emotions. The voice of a woman who was always looking for trouble with me and never stopped attacking me, even her brother was just as annoying as her.
"Monica. It's not surprising that we would meet here. There's no need to act as if you're surprised by my presence because this is a very common event for people like us," Gerry said without enthusiasm.
"Is that how you reply to the fuck from the person you were set up with? You should have greeted me with more length and warmth because no matter what, we will soon be united by our arranged marriage," Monica said and folded her arms confidently.
