Chapter 99 Not Wanting to Owe Him
"George, if you've lost your memory or just don't want to acknowledge me, there's no need to make me your target. I'm not here to mess up your life. Let's just act like we never met; that works for me," Isabella said, feeling wronged.
Ray was getting more and more confused.
Isabella lifted her chin a bit and went on, "I'm just a pregnant woman looking for a job. If EX Corporation can't take me, I'll find another place. No big deal."
"Isabella, you messed up at work, and now I can't even bring it up? When I say you should leave EX Corporation, I'm just being fair. When have I ever targeted you? Don't think that just because you're pregnant, I can't do anything about it," Ray said firmly.
Isabella looked at the angry Ray and chuckled, "Then fire me."
"You!" Ray fumed.
'This Isabella is something else. Daring to challenge me, she's the first,' he thought.
Ray was so mad that he got a headache. For some reason, this headache was worse than usual, like he'd seen this woman arguing with him in his dreams.
Isabella ignored him. She was hungry and needed to eat, otherwise, the baby wouldn't get enough nutrition.
As she walked to the restaurant, Isabella lectured her unborn baby. "Baby, if you're a boy and grow up to be ungrateful, I'll break your legs. If you're a girl, you must stay away from heartless men. Keep your eyes open. Handsome men are all unfaithful, like your father."
Isabella grabbed a tray to get food; the restaurant was self-service.
Since getting pregnant, Isabella had developed a craving for meat.
She picked a plate of meat, a plate of sweets, and several glasses of juice. She was starving.
While Isabella was focused on eating, someone sat down across from her with a tray.
With her mouth full of food, Isabella glanced up.
In just a second, she acted like he didn't exist and kept pigging out on her meat.
After finishing the meat, Isabella started on the sweets.
Ray's face across from her was almost wrinkled into a ball, and he said coldly, "You're pregnant and still eating so many sweets. Aren't you afraid of gestational diabetes?"
Isabella paused, thinking he really knew a lot.
"I like it. Is that a problem?" Isabella snorted, picked up a glass of juice, and gulped it down.
"Isabella, I'm just reminding you that if your blood sugar rises during pregnancy, it's not good for you or the baby."
Isabella was puzzled.
Ray was very satisfied with Isabella's reaction, leisurely cutting his steak as he explained in detail, "High blood sugar during pregnancy can cause miscarriage and fetal malformations; it can lead to fetal growth retardation, abnormal fat distribution in the fetus, and other issues. No one told you this?"
Hearing this, Isabella quickly pushed the plate aside. It was her first pregnancy, and no one had told her these things.
Even when reading pregnancy guides, she hadn't paid attention to this.
'Is it really that serious, or is he just trying to scare me?' she wondered.
"How do you know these things?" she asked.
"Common sense."
'Common sense? A grown man knowing common sense about pregnancy? Can it be that Susan is also pregnant? There have been rumors in the company that Susan is pregnant. It seems to be true,' Isabella cursed inwardly.
"If you have the courage to be a single mom, the baby in your belly should be very important to you. I didn't expect you to be so ignorant," he mocked.
Isabella's anger flared up again. "Yeah, I'm a single mom. If I had a husband, he'd remind me of all this 'common sense' stuff. I don't need you to do it."
Ray put down his knife and fork, looking at her. "Why are you so mad? I'm just giving you a friendly reminder, and you take it the wrong way? Ungrateful."
"No need, thanks," Isabella said, grabbing her tray and leaving.
Ray angrily shoved his tray aside.
Isabella, still fuming, placed her tray in the designated area and didn't notice what was behind her. When she turned around, she bumped into a waiter carrying a pot of boiling seafood porridge.
In her shock, a pair of large hands grabbed her waist and spun her around, causing the boiling seafood porridge to spill all over Ray's back.
The situation escalated quickly.
Isabella was tightly protected in Ray's arms, completely unharmed.
The burning heat made Ray's brow furrow, pain evident.
"Mr. Price," Isabella said, nervous.
Ray looked at Isabella in his arms, feeling a strange sensation. He didn't know why, but when the incident happened, he suddenly rushed over.
It was as if a voice in his heart urged him that he must not let her get hurt.
This subconscious, almost reflexive protective instinct puzzled even him.
Isabella quickly took out her phone to call an ambulance.
The hotel staff were also in a flurry, checking Ray's injuries.
The scene was chaotic, and Isabella was a bit flustered.
In the emergency room, doctors and nurses were methodically treating Ray's injuries. As they cut away his clothes, a layer of his skin came off with them.
After treatment, he lay on the hospital bed, being pushed out of the emergency room.
"How is he?" Isabella asked worriedly.
The doctor said, "It's quite serious. We'll need to observe for a while."
Isabella didn't quite understand what "quite serious" meant in doctor terms, but based on the surface meaning...
She suddenly thought of something and said loudly, "He isn't in danger of dying, is he?"
The doctor, sweating, explained, "The patient is injured on his back. The clothes stuck to his skin due to the heat, making the treatment process quite painful, but it's not life-threatening."
Isabella patted her frightened chest, nodding somewhat understandingly.
Ray was pushed into a VIP ward.
With injuries on his back and ribs, he could only lie on his stomach.
Isabella stood by his bedside, hesitating for a long time, and asked, "Are you okay?"
Hearing Isabella's voice, Ray's brow furrowed slightly and he answered, "Hmm."
"I'm sorry, you got hurt like this because of me." Isabella felt apologetic, after all, he had kept her from the injury.
"It's not your fault. I brought it on myself," he said, wincing in pain.
His dismissive attitude was kind of annoying.
"Anyway, since it's because of me, I'll stay and take care of you," Isabella said, reaching for a cup for Ray.
But she didn't hold the cup properly, and it fell directly onto his back.
Isabella apologized, panicked, "Sorry, sorry."
Ray winced in pain.
"Isabella, can you stop moving around? Do you have a grudge against me?" he fumed.
"Sorry, sorry." Isabella continued to apologize.
"Call Joshua. If he's not dead, tell him to get over here," Ray ordered.
"Mr. Price, let me take care of you," she said sincerely, not wanting to owe him anything.
