Chapter 91 She Was Seeing Things
"I don't think it's about me wasting my time here. It's about your discrimination against pregnant women. What law says pregnant women can't work? Or which law lets a company deny job opportunities to pregnant women just like that?" Isabella's voice was strong and clear.
She thought, 'If they didn't want me to come for an interview, fine. But to let me come and then try to dismiss me? That's just too much.'
The three interviewers exchanged glances but stayed firm. "Sorry, next."
The security guard stepped forward to pull Isabella away. As he was about to touch her arm, she snapped, "Don't touch me. I want to see your CEO. I want to ask him why I'm being dismissed without even an interview. This is discrimination."
The interviewer sneered at Isabella. "Miss, our CEO is too busy to see you. Please leave and stop making a scene."
"Please leave." The security guard forcibly escorted Isabella out.
The girls who had been gossiping about her earlier saw her disheveled state and covered their mouths, laughing.
Isabella walked out of EX Corporation, feeling dejected. She had skipped breakfast to rush to the interview, thinking she had a shot at the job. But they didn't even give her a chance.
Feeling dizzy, she held onto the marble railing by the steps and walked down slowly.
As she reached the last step, Isabella's vision went black. She gripped the railing tightly, afraid of falling. She couldn't let her baby get hurt.
Not far from the steps, a black Rolls-Royce slowly came to a stop.
The rear door opened, and a pair of shiny leather shoes and long legs emerged first.
The assistant who got out of the front passenger seat quickly placed his hand on the door frame and said, "Sir, please."
A man stepped out of the car, buttoning his suit with slender fingers, and walked towards the steps.
Isabella hurriedly tried to approach him. "Sir, please wait."
Just as Isabella was about to walk towards the man, she saw his face.
'What is going on? Am I hallucinating? Or am I seeing things? Why do I see George's face?' Isabella thought.
"George." Isabella unconsciously called out George's name to the man.
Though her voice was small, the man glanced at her as he passed by.
That glance was extremely unfamiliar.
'Am I really seeing things?' she thought.
"George." Isabella called out twice more, but the man didn't look back and quickly entered the EX Corporation building.
'Have I mistaken him for someone else? It must have been an illusion. How can it be him? George is already dead. It is probably just a man who looks a lot like him. I just miss George too much,' she thought.
Isabella's vision went black, and she fainted.
When she woke up, she was already in EX Corporation's private hospital.
"You finally woke up. You scared me to death." Elodie reached out to touch Isabella's forehead, making sure she didn't have a fever.
"I think I fainted," Isabella said weakly.
"Think? You didn't eat breakfast, your blood sugar was too low. It's no wonder you fainted. Luckily, you and the baby are fine," Elodie said, still shaken.
"Did you bring me to the hospital?" Isabella asked and struggled to sit up, leaning against the headboard.
"It was EX Corporation's CEO's assistant who found you fainted downstairs. Probably because you were pregnant and they were afraid something might happen, which would look bad for the company. So they brought you to their private hospital," Elodie explained.
Isabella smiled wryly. "A company like this has no humanity. They didn't even interview me because I was pregnant. I have no good feelings left for them."
"That's pretty awful. This company is run by people from Stellaria. Imagine how bad the discrimination is in other local companies," Elodie said, shaking her head. She had faced her own share of rejections, even without being pregnant.
Living in a foreign country was tough.
After staying in the hospital for three days, Isabella finally met the CEO's assistant, Joshua Sanchez.
"Miss, I'm Joshua Sanchez, the CEO's assistant. Glad to see you're recovering well," Joshua said.
"Mr. Sanchze." Isabella started.
Joshua cut her off, "Please, call me Joshua."
"Joshua," Isabella stated firmly, "I want to meet your CEO."
Joshua looked surprised. "Do you have something important to discuss with the CEO?"
'Joshua should know about my interview issue. Why is he pretending to be clueless?' Isabella thought.
"You should have heard that I submitted my resume to your company and faced unfair treatment during the interview," she said.
Joshua frowned slightly. "What unfair treatment?"
"Because I'm pregnant, even though my resume was accepted, I wasn't given an interview opportunity. I think this is discrimination against women, especially pregnant women," Isabella said, her anger rising.
Joshua, who had been with EX Corporation for five years, knew the company's rules and requirements, including the regulation regarding pregnant women.
"Sorry for the inconvenience. However, the company does have such a policy. The rules are set by higher-ups, and we're just employees, so..."
Before Joshua could finish, Isabella interrupted with hostility. "Is that what employment law says? Does EX Corporation's internal policy override the law?"
"This..." Joshua hesitated.
"I want equal employment rights. If you can't make a decision, let me meet your CEO," Isabella demanded firmly.
"You're putting me in a difficult position."
"Joshua, I just want to meet your CEO and express my concerns. Whether your company hires me or not, I will accept the outcome," Isabella said, knowing that making a fuss might get her blacklisted, but she couldn't bear the injustice.
"Alright, I will convey your request to our CEO," Joshua said, thinking the result was beyond his control.
"Thank you."
The next day, Elodie came to pick Isabella up from the hospital and chatted with her about the company's CEO gossip. "Did you know? The CEO of the branch of EX Corporation is named Ray Price. He's the future son-in-law of the headquarters' CEO, Nicholas Miller. They say he's very capable. Since joining EX Corporation, he's revived several nearly bankrupt projects and gained a great reputation in the industry."
Isabella pouted. "Is he really that impressive?"
"That's what people say. Who knows what's true or false," Elodie said, packing Isabella's things. "Let's go."
