Chapter 90 He's With You in a Different Way Now
Elodie felt super guilty talking about all this stuff.
Isabella set her milk down and looked at Elodie calmly, "Honestly, I didn't even know I was pregnant back then. I think George must've been in a lot of pain to treat Nathan like that."
"Nathan had it coming," Elodie said, looking up with a sorry expression. "Isabella, I'm really sorry."
"It's not your fault," Isabella replied, knowing no amount of regret could bring back that little life.
Elodie forced a smile and grabbed Isabella's hand, "Hey, you're pregnant again now. You must be so happy, right? George must be thrilled too."
Isabella gently touched her belly and smiled softly, "Yeah, he should be really happy."
"Didn't he come to Rexonia with you?" Elodie asked.
Isabella's eyes filled with tears as she looked at Elodie, "He left."
Elodie was confused by what "left" meant. She asked, "What happened to him?"
"Elodie, George passed away," Isabella said, almost breaking down.
Elodie's mind went blank, thinking, 'What kind of terrible news is this?'
"Passed away? What happened, Isabella?" Elodie felt heartbroken.
When Isabella married George, he was unconscious. They were just about to have some good times, and now he was gone.
The painful memories were too much for Isabella, and she started to tremble.
"Alright, I won't ask anymore." Elodie hugged Isabella and gently patted her back, "It's all in the past. You still have the baby. He's just with you in a different way now."
The Garcia family had been renting a house ever since they moved to Rexonia.
Elodie didn't go back to school but found a job as a tutor, thinking she'd return to Stellar City eventually.
Even though George was gone, Isabella was in Rexonia, so Elodie decided to stay and be there for her.
After sending Brenda back to the country, Elodie moved in with Isabella.
"Elodie, this room is kinda small, is that okay?" Isabella asked while tidying up.
Elodie quickly came over and helped Isabella sit down and rest, "Can you stop moving around? This room is perfect. I'll tidy up. You just relax."
Isabella sat on the bed, watching Elodie organize the room and her clothes, feeling really happy, "I never thought we'd live together again, just like back in school."
"We can't go back to school, but it feels like we can get that feeling back. When the baby is born, we can even look for a kindergarten." Elodie smiled, sweating a lot.
"Are you okay with Brenda being alone in Stellar City?" Isabella asked.
"Brenda went back to her hometown. She's got her siblings there, so it's better than following me." Elodie gave Isabella a reassuring look.
"Elodie, I passed my certification exam. Do you think I should find a tutoring job or a proper job?" Isabella asked, munching on an apple.
"I heard EX Corporation is hiring. You should give it a shot. The benefits are great, and there are a lot of people from Stellaria, so it's easy to fit in." Elodie said.
Isabella nodded, "I'll send in a resume later."
Big companies usually have high standards, and she was pregnant, so she might not meet the requirements.
"Alright, almost done here. What do you wanna eat later? I'll cook," Elodie said, wiping her sweat.
"Can you cook?" Isabella asked, surprised.
Elodie couldn't cook before.
"Of course, I'm a quick learner, but nothing too fancy," Elodie replied.
"Alright then, let's have pasta."
"Okay, pasta it is."
The next day, Elodie headed to her tutoring job, and Isabella opened her laptop to check job postings. An email from EX Corporation popped up.
It said her resume had been accepted and included the interview time.
In Rexonia, jobs were tough to come by. With an interview opportunity, she was ready to give it a shot.
Even though it was early summer, it was still a bit chilly. Isabella wore a black ankle-length dress with a light white cardigan over it.
EX Corporation was in a new commercial area, not too close to her rented apartment. With the interview time approaching, she hailed a cab and arrived at the lobby, which was already packed with other candidates.
A big company like EX Corporation, with great benefits, lots of holidays, and good pay, was highly sought after.
Job seekers flocked to it.
There was a long line in front of the interview room. Isabella looked at her number, 18, figuring she'd have to wait a while.
During the wait, she filled out an employment application, made a copy of her resume, handed it to the staff, and waited patiently.
There were people from Stellaria and locals from Rexonia at the interview. They occasionally gave Isabella, with her big belly, strange looks.
"EX Corporation has no standards now? Even pregnant women are applying. The quality is really going down."
"Isn't it? Look at her, she's due in a few months. Wouldn't it be better to rest at home?"
"How can you be so heartless? Her belly is so big, and she's still looking for a job. She must be in a tough spot. It's not easy."
"But the problem is, EX Corporation has never hired a pregnant woman before."
"You guys are worrying for nothing. Get through the interview yourself before meddling."
There was a lot of gossip, but Isabella just kept her head down, pretending not to hear.
Soon, it was Isabella's turn. She stood up, stretched her numb legs, and walked over to the interview room.
The interviewers inside almost simultaneously looked up at her, then their eyes fell on her protruding belly.
Isabella hadn't had a chance to introduce herself when one of the interviewers spoke first, "Sorry, are you pregnant?"
Isabella nodded, "Yes."
"Then I'm sorry, but we don't hire pregnant women here."
"You reviewed my resume before notifying me for the interview. Why the sudden change of heart? Pregnant women can do the job just as well," Isabella said, feeling it was unfair.
The interviewer adjusted his black-rimmed glasses and exchanged a glance with the other interviewers, "We apologize. There might have been a small oversight in the review process. Sorry for wasting your time. Next one."
