Chapter 50 What Exactly Did I Do to Offend You?
The interviewers glanced at Isabella's hastily filled-out application and frowned. "You're Isabella Neville, right?"
Isabella nodded. "Yes."
"You're a junior at Stellar University and haven't graduated yet?"
"Yes."
"Are you planning to intern with us?"
"If I pass the internship, I hope to stay."
"Do you have any notable work to show?"
"No."
The lead interviewer put down the form and looked at her seriously. "Ms. Neville, many people are applying for this position. Your simple application shows a lack of respect for the Spencer Group and this job."
"No, it's not like that. This is my first time at such an interview. I didn't know what to prepare. Can I get another chance?" Isabella explained.
"You should grab opportunities yourself. Next."
Failing the interview, Isabella walked out dejectedly. Molly, who had also finished her interview, saw Isabella's downcast expression and understood the result.
"It's okay. The Spencer Group is in the hiring season. There will be another round soon. You can try again," Molly comforted her.
But Isabella wasn't thinking about that.
'Wasn't I supposed to get special consideration? How did it turn into a formal process? If I knew, I would've prepared better. This is all George's fault,' she thought.
Having never been to the Spencer Group, Isabella didn't know where the CEO's office was, so she asked Molly, "Do you know where Mr. Spencer's office is?"
"Are you going to see Mr. Spencer? You really shouldn't. Failing an interview is normal. You can try again next time. If you go to him, you might not get another chance to join the Spencer Group," Molly said.
Isabella understood Molly was looking out for her and said gratefully, "It's okay. If he doesn't want me to come, I won't come in the future. Don't worry."
Molly pointed to a prominent elevator. "That one goes directly to the CEO's office."
Isabella started to walk, but Molly grabbed her. "Are you sure you don't want to reconsider? Mr. Spencer doesn't see just anyone. What if..."
"It's fine. I'm just going to talk, not committing a crime," Isabella said.
Molly sighed. "Alright then."
The elevator to the CEO's office wasn't accessible to just anyone. You needed a card to get in and another card to select the floor.
Isabella couldn't use it.
But she noted the floor and planned to take the employee elevator to the 20th floor and then climb two more floors.
Unfortunately, the elevator stopped working on the 10th floor, so she had to climb twelve floors.
After climbing twelve floors in one go, Isabella sat on the stairs, gasping for breath.
The more she thought about it, the more upset she felt. She sat there, tears streaming down her face.
Caleb happened to pass by and saw her, saying in shock, "Mrs. Spencer?"
Isabella quickly wiped her tears and tried to compose herself. "Caleb, I'm here to see George."
"Mr. Spencer is in a meeting. Why don't you wait in his office?" Caleb said.
Isabella nodded. "Okay."
Caleb led her to the office, poured her a cup of coffee, and then went to the meeting room.
George was frowning as he listened to department heads report their work. Caleb whispered in his ear, "Mr. Spencer, Mrs. Spencer is here. I think she was just crying. Do you want to..."
George raised his hand and looked at the others. "Alright, that's it for today. Meeting's over."
The manager who was reporting was left speechless.
George hurried back to the CEO's office where Isabella was sitting in the reception area, resting her head on her hand, clearly upset.
"What happened? Why were you crying?"
George walked over, took a tissue, and was about to wipe Isabella's face when she pushed him away. "George, what do you mean by this?"
"What did I do?" he asked.
"You asked me to come for an interview just to go through the motions, right? Why was I eliminated? Did you do it on purpose? If you don't want me to come to the company, just say so." Isabella vented and started to leave, but George grabbed her wrist and pulled her back. "I'm innocent. If I didn't want you to come to the company, why would I give you the interview form?"
"Who knows what you mean." Isabella snorted, trying to shake off his hand but couldn't.
George looked at Caleb. "Who was in charge of the interview today? Tell him to come see me."
"Yes, Mr. Spencer," Caleb said.
"Stop," Isabella called out to Caleb, angrily looking at George. "What's wrong with you? This has nothing to do with the interviewer. It's your fault."
"What did I do wrong?" George was confused.
Since George didn't realize his mistake, there was no point in talking further. "If that's the case, then forget it."
Isabella tried to leave again, but George pulled her back. This time, he asked more harshly, "Why are you running? What do you mean? What did I do to upset you?"
"You're yelling at me, George? Why are you yelling at me? It's your fault, and you're yelling at me. Let go of me." Isabella shouted, tears flowing freely.
George took a deep breath. He really didn't know how to comfort a woman, but seeing Isabella like this made his heart ache. He decided to just hold her in his arms.
"I'm not yelling," he said gently.
"You are yelling," Isabella said, raising her voice.
"Okay, I yelled. I was wrong. Please stop crying, alright?" George wiped her tears. "Stop crying. Your makeup is getting ruined."
"None of your business."
"Alright, none of my business. I'm wrong. I didn't do well. It's my fault," George comforted her.
Isabella pushed him away and sat on the sofa, grabbing a tissue to wipe her tears. "Then tell me, what did you do wrong?"
George really didn't know what he did wrong, but he understood that it was because he didn't inform the interviewer, which led to Isabella being unprepared and eliminated. That was his fault.
"It was just a formality. Whether you passed the interview or not didn't matter," he explained.
"How can it not matter?" Isabella argued. "It made me feel like a fool, like an idiot."
George didn't say anything. He didn't want to make her angrier, but he knew this issue wouldn't be resolved quickly. He probably wouldn't be able to get any work done later.
George glanced at Caleb, who understood and quietly left the CEO's office, closing the door behind him.
"George, I'm talking to you. Are you even listening?" Isabella felt offended.
"I'm listening. I'm listening very carefully." George grabbed Isabella by the waist and pulled her onto his lap. "Alright, I've admitted my mistake. Can you forgive me?"
