Chapter 44 Behaving Well at Home
"My work hours are pretty flexible. Elodie mentioned you were planning to intern, so I came to talk you out of it," Nathan said.
Isabella looked confused. "Talk me out of what?"
"I don't think you need to rush into an internship," he replied.
"Why?" Isabella asked.
Nathan couldn't think of a reason, so he relented. "If you really want to intern, come to my company. I can set you up with a position."
"Nathan, I promised Mrs. Spencer I'd work at the Spencer Group. We had an agreement."
Isabella understood Nathan's intention.
Nathan disagreed, getting angry. "Just because she says so? Isabella, when did you lose your sense of self? You're ruining yourself."
"I'm not, Nathan. No one's pushing me. Don't overthink it," Isabella said, squatting down to continue packing her clothes.
Nathan stood for a moment, then spoke patiently. "I just think you should have your own ideas. I only want what's best for you."
"I'm fine," she said flatly.
"Sorry, I didn't mean to upset you," Nathan apologized.
Isabella zipped up her suitcase and stood up. "I'm not upset, Nathan. My life isn't as bad as you think. George and I are actually doing well."
"George may seem gentle and refined, but deep down, he's cold and ruthless. You don't really know him," Nathan said.
Isabella was unhappy with Nathan's assessment of George. "At least he's good to me."
"That's only a matter of time. He can't be loyal forever. Remember how he ditched Juniper, even though he was crazy about her? No matter how good or beautiful you are, can you really compete with a Hollywood star?"
Her face darkened, but she didn't argue.
She carried her suitcase to the door and continued packing some miscellaneous items.
Seeing Isabella not speaking, Nathan squatted in front of her and said, "Isabella, if I had confessed to you before you married George, would you still have joined the Spencer family?"
Isabella paused, then said, "I don't know."
"Do I still have a chance?" Nathan asked hopefully.
Isabella, not wanting to give Nathan false hope, said, "No."
"What if George dies?"
Isabella's fingers trembled slightly. The word "die" was very sensitive to her.
She didn't know why George had become a vegetable after a car accident, but she didn't want George's life threatened again because of her.
"Nathan, what are you planning?" Isabella asked, her eyes cold and angry.
Nathan didn't expect such a strong reaction, forcing a smile. "Just kidding. You took it seriously."
"Nathan, don't joke about such things. George isn't stupid, waiting for you to kill him. You know they'd fry you for murder, right?"
"I said it was a joke. Don't be mad," Nathan said.
Isabella snorted. "Alright, if there's nothing else, you should go back."
"How about I give you a ride back to the Spencer family later? You have so many things, hard to carry them."
Isabella refused. "John will come to pick me up."
Nathan pressed his lips together. "Alright then, I'll leave now."
As Nathan walked out the door, his face darkened, and a hint of malice and coldness appeared in his eyes.
He took out his phone and called Juniper. "Does your offer still stand?"
There was a pause, then a laugh. "Changed your mind?"
"Let's set a time."
"Alright."
After Nathan left, Isabella sat alone on the sofa, mulling over his words.
Feeling restless, she finally called George, who was on a business trip in Riverside City.
George was in a meeting when his phone rang. He glanced at it, put on his headset, and gestured for the manager to continue.
"Hello?" George answered.
"George, is this a good time?" Isabella asked, worried about disturbing him.
"Yes," George replied.
"How's the security there? You only took Caleb. Is that enough? Should I send more people?"
George's heart softened at her anxious tone. "Did something happen?"
"Not really... I just feel you're not safe. Are you okay there?" Isabella asked.
"It's very safe here. Don't worry about me," George reassured her, feeling warm inside.
"That's good. Take care and come back soon."
A rare smile appeared on George's lips. "Okay, you be good at home too."
After hanging up, George's smile lingered. The managers were stunned; it was rare for George to take a call during a meeting, let alone speak so gently.
'This isn't the cold-faced George who dominates the business world,' they thought.
George signaled for the meeting to continue.
Isabella felt relieved after the call.
Early the next morning, John picked her up and drove her to the Spencer Mansion.
Patricia, as always, was very attentive, worried something might happen to her. Isabella guessed George hadn't told her she wasn't pregnant, making it hard to explain.
"John, take Isabella's suitcase to her bedroom. And did you prepare the nutritious soup I asked for? If it's ready, bring it to her room later," Patricia instructed, holding Isabella's hand. "Before George left, he told me to take good care of you. I even sent Thalia back to Damon's place."
"I'm fine," Isabella said.
"You're the heart of our family now. Take care of yourself, okay?" Patricia said, leading Isabella upstairs. "You must be tired. Rest for a while."
"Patricia, actually, I have something to tell you," Isabella said.
Patricia looked surprised. "What is it?"
"Didn't you want me to work at the Spencer Group? I've arranged the internship and can start."
After George woke up, Patricia had put this matter aside, initially having a purpose for wanting Isabella to intern.
"Isabella, you're pregnant now. It's better to rest at home. We can talk about the job later."
'I've gone through a lot to arrange this internship. Resting at home isn't an option since I'm not pregnant,' Isabella thought.
"Patricia, I'm really bored at home. Don't worry, I'll take good care of myself. Besides, George is at the company too. He'll look after me," Isabella said.
