Chapter 114 Infidelity During Marriage
"I don't know either," Lucas said, his eyes dull as he looked at Isabella. "I'm not bringing this up to argue about Hazel. I just want you to know, if you're looking for your real dad, go for it. I heard he doesn't have any kids, so he'd probably welcome you."
"Mind your own business," Isabella snapped, not sure if she was rejecting the truth or just thought Lucas was full of it. She slammed the door and stormed out.
After a few steps, she collapsed onto a bench, her mind spinning. For two hours, she sat there, tormented, before finally dragging herself out of the hospital.
Lost in thought, she rear-ended a car at the intersection.
The guy in the car, fuming, got out to confront her.
Isabella locked herself in her car, ignoring his angry pounding on the window, lost in her own world.
When the cops showed up, she was still out of it until George arrived and snapped her back to reality.
"Are you okay?" George asked, checking her over.
Isabella stayed silent while the police talked to George.
Skipping the insurance hassle, George paid the other driver on the spot to settle things quickly.
Thinking she was just scared, he had someone take her car and drove her home himself.
"It's alright, just a fender bender. As long as you're okay," George said, cupping her face, trying to bring her back.
Isabella just stared blankly at him, saying nothing.
"What's wrong?" George asked, gently rubbing her hands. "It's okay, the car can be fixed. No big deal."
Isabella finally blinked. "George, I'm fine."
"Want to take a nap?" he suggested.
Isabella nodded.
But lying in bed, she couldn't sleep. She leaned against the headboard, staring into space.
George came in, and she looked up at him.
"Why aren't you sleeping?" he asked.
"I can't sleep," she replied.
"Still upset about the accident?"
"No."
George climbed into bed and held her. "Then what's on your mind?"
Isabella lowered her eyes. "Lucas has cancer."
"Really?" George was surprised.
"I went to the hospital to see Elodie's mom and ran into Donna. That's how I found out," Isabella explained.
"Did you see him?"
"I did," she said, taking a deep breath.
"How is he?"
"I asked Daniel. He said it's not good." Isabella rested her head on George's chest, murmuring, "Lucas told me something I never expected."
George gently stroked her hair. "What did he say?"
"He said I'm the child of my mom and another man," she revealed.
George's hand paused. "Is he serious?"
"I don't know. Maybe he's just trying to smear my mom, or maybe it's true."
"So, that's what's been on your mind?"
"Yeah," Isabella admitted.
"You're not a kid anymore. Whether it's true or not, it shouldn't mess you up too much. If Lucas is your real dad, how much love has he shown you? If he's not, then his actions make more sense," George said.
'That makes sense, but how could my always-perfect mom have an affair?' she wondered.
"So, do you think if my mom really cheated, it's forgivable?" she asked.
"Of course not. Cheating is never okay, no matter the reason. Betraying your partner is unforgivable, no matter how justified you think you are," George answered firmly.
"That's why I feel like if I was born from that, I'm inherently tainted," Isabella said, feeling down.
"Don't think like that. This isn't about you. It just shows there were issues between Lucas and your mom," George comforted her.
Isabella took a deep breath. "Lucas said that man doesn't have any kids and told me to find him."
"What do you think?"
"I guess that man doesn't even know I exist. It's pointless," Isabella shook her head.
"Don't you want to know your true identity? What that man looks like, what kind of relationship he had with your mom? There are a lot of things you might not know," he said.
"I haven't thought about it yet. But I want to do a paternity test with Lucas first to see if we're really not related," Isabella said.
George agreed. "Find Daniel."
"Will you go with me?" She looked up at him.
George nodded. "Of course."
George found a less busy day at work to go with Isabella to the hospital.
This was the first time Daniel had seen George since he fell into the river in Riverside City.
Daniel got emotional, giving George a couple of punches while crying. "Don't you dare leave me again."
"Okay, I promise," George laughed.
"You didn't even call to let me know. You're heartless," Daniel complained.
George didn't accept that. He had called Daniel, but his phone was off. "I did call, but your phone was off. You can't blame me."
"Couldn't you call again? Call more times? You're actually heartless," Daniel said.
Isabella laughed along with them.
"What brings you here?" Daniel asked.
"To do a paternity test for Isabella and Lucas," George got straight to the point.
"Why a sudden paternity test?" Daniel was confused.
George didn't explain, just glared at Daniel. "Just do it. Stop asking so many questions."
"Okay." Daniel picked up the phone and spoke to a colleague. "Let's go, draw some blood first."
"How soon can we get the results?" George asked.
Daniel checked his watch. "Two hours."
"Good."
After Daniel drew Isabella's blood, she quietly sat on a bench outside the waiting room.
During those two hours, Isabella thought a lot.
When she was little, Lucas wasn't particularly affectionate, but he never verbally or physically abused her either.
