Chapter 112 I Pity Him

After the affair, Isabella dozed off.

George, feeling pretty content, got up, took a shower, and got ready to head to the detention center to see Joseph.

"Sir, Joseph's about to be moved to prison. He's been sentenced to death, and it's happening soon. Mrs. Debra Spencer's been at the family cemetery all day since she heard. Probably feeling bad for Mr. Aaron Spencer," Caleb reported.

Joseph was a big deal in the Spencer family. If he had just kept his nose clean, he wouldn't be in this mess.

"It's all on him," George said.

"Think he'll feel any guilt now that he's facing death?" Caleb wondered.

George shook his head with a slight smile. "Nope."

"Then why bother seeing him?" Caleb was confused.

"I pity him," George replied.

'Pity?' Caleb thought, 'I don't get it, but I guess that's how it is.'

Joseph was an illegitimate kid, and his birth kicked off a whole mess. He lost his mom early and got brought back to the Spencer family, which should've been a fresh start. But he got eaten up by hate and jealousy, turning more and more twisted.

When George saw Joseph, he was huddled in a corner, with long hair and a scruffy beard.

George just stood outside the bars, watching him quietly.

"Joseph, you got a visitor," an officer said.

Joseph looked up. When he saw George, he rubbed his eyes hard, like he couldn't believe it, and then rubbed them again. When he realized George was really there, he laughed. "George, you're one lucky guy. You survived the car crash and didn't drown in the river. You were born to mess with me."

George stayed silent.

"George, why won't you just die? If you did, the Spencer Group would be all mine," Joseph laughed, then cried. "I know my birth was a disgrace, but you let me come back to the family. So why still treat me like dirt? Why? I'm part of the Spencer family too. Why treat me like this?"

"I didn't get a dime from Aaron's inheritance, and my mom's grave isn't even in the family cemetery but out in the sticks. You can't do this to me," Joseph wiped his nose and said indifferently, "Whatever, I'm almost dead anyway. Why care about this stuff? Even if I die, I'll make sure you guys don't have peace."

"Aaron bringing you back was already the best he could do, but you were too impatient, Joseph. You did this to yourself," George said calmly.

Maybe those words hit a nerve, and Joseph cried even harder. "It's too late, everything's too late. I'm gonna die, but I don't wanna die, I don't wanna die."

To George, Joseph didn't feel any real regret. He was just scared of dying.

When Isabella got back to Spencer Manor, the whole family was around George and Frederick.

She wanted to visit Elodie's mom, Brenda, at the hospital. But she worried her sudden visit might remind Brenda of Nathan and make things worse. So she decided to call first. "Elodie, how's Brenda?"

"Still in a coma," Elodie said, sounding exhausted.

"What did the doctor say? Any idea when she might wake up?" Isabella asked, worried.

"I don't know," Elodie replied.

Isabella sighed, "Do you need a caregiver? You must be exhausted handling this alone."

"No, I'm fine. Did you come back to Stellar City?" Elodie asked.

"Yeah, I wanted to see Brenda, but I was worried about bringing up bad memories. I didn't know she was still in a coma," Isabella explained.

"Maybe I made the wrong call," Elodie sighed.

"It's not your fault. Without the surgery, things could've been worse. Once she wakes up, it'll get better," Isabella tried to comfort her.

But she knew deep down that it was hard for outsiders to truly understand.

"Let's hope so," Elodie said, sounding defeated.

Isabella hung up and decided to head to the hospital to offer some support. She grabbed her car keys and drove the most inconspicuous car she had.

The hospital was just a few blocks from Spencer Manor. After parking, she grabbed some nutritional supplements and took the elevator to the eleventh floor, where Elodie said the ward was.

The elevator was packed with people coming and going.

After getting out, she felt a bit lost and wandered around for a while. Frustrated, she called Elodie, who helped her find the right direction. She put away her phone and walked towards the ward.

As she passed by another ward, she heard a familiar voice and froze.

"Donna, will Lucas die? Did he write a will?" It was Clara's voice.

"How would I know if he wrote a will? You're his only child. Whether he did or not, his inheritance is all yours," Donna replied.

"But what about Isabella? Donna, at this point, is she really..." Clara started.

Donna shushed her.

Hearing their footsteps, Isabella quickly hid in a corner.

After Donna and Clara walked away, she came out, thinking, 'Lucas is seriously ill again? Why aren't they causing trouble at Spencer Manor this time? Maybe they think George is dead, so there's no point.'

Isabella bit her lip and headed towards Brenda's ward.

Brenda looked pale, her lips colorless, and Elodie looked worn out.

Isabella didn't know how to offer much comfort.

"I heard Daniel is the attending doctor. What did he say?" Isabella asked.

Elodie shook her head. "He said if Brenda doesn't wake up soon, I need to prepare for the worst."

Isabella held Elodie's hand tightly. "Don't worry too much. Older people take longer to recover. Brenda's always been healthy; she'll pull through."

"I don't know," Elodie said, holding her head in pain. "Nathan's already in a bad state. If something happens to Brenda, I can't handle it."

Isabella hugged Elodie, gently stroking her back. "Brenda will be fine."

"Isabella, why did you come back to Stellar City? I heard there was an earthquake where you were. Is everyone okay?" Elodie asked.

"We're all still alive. I forgave George, so I came back," Isabella said.

Elodie nodded, relieved. "Patricia didn't give you a hard time, did she?"

"No, I left without saying goodbye, so I get why Patricia's mad at me. But she didn't say anything when I came back this time," Isabella said.

"You gave George a child, of course, she's happy," Elodie said.
