Chapter 101 Finding Answers in Dreams
"If you don't agree with my engagement to Susan, I don't mind," Ray said.
Nicholas put out his cigar and looked at Ray. "So, you don't really love her, do you?"
Ray stayed quiet, which pretty much answered the question.
Nicholas sighed, clearly disappointed. "Do you know what Susan said to me when she saved you?"
Ray kept his silence.
"She said she fell in love with you at first sight." Nicholas chuckled, a bit of a self-mocking smile on his face. "My daughter, with her privileged background, angelic looks, and all the wealth and power, fell for a guy on the brink of death. That's when I knew she was serious."
Ray still didn't say a word.
"Ray, if you play by the rules, I don't mind you becoming my son-in-law," Nicholas added.
Ray looked at Nicholas with a cold, expressionless face. "I think you misunderstand me. If you have any reservations about me, we can call off the engagement or even the marriage."
Nicholas got a bit angry. "You know how much Susan likes you. How could I let her be upset?"
"I can talk to Susan," Ray said.
Nicholas waved his hand, not wanting to discuss it further. "Let's not talk about this now. I'm quite pleased with how the performance improved after you went to the branch in Rexonia."
"Just luck," Ray said coldly.
"I can tell the difference between ability and luck." Despite his prejudices, Nicholas actually admired Ray; he was a rare talent. "Actually, your ability doesn't matter to me. As long as you make Susan happy, I won't make things difficult for you."
Ray understood; it was just about being an obedient fool. Keep her entertained during the day and satisfied at night.
Ray sneered. "Nicholas, you really flatter me."
Susan came over with some fine wine, her face beaming. "What are you two talking about that's so happy?"
Nicholas looked at Susan with a mix of affection and concern. "I am telling Ray to spend more time with you. Happiness is the most important thing."
"Ray is career-driven, which is a good thing," Susan said, smiling up at Ray.
"Alright, I won't intrude on your time. I'm off to play cards," Nicholas said before heading to the game room.
Susan leaned against Ray, carefully watching his expression. "Did Nicholas say anything?"
Ray gently swirled the wine in his glass. "Let's postpone the engagement for now."
"Why?" Susan asked, feeling a pang of anxiety.
"I've been really swamped with work lately," Ray said coldly.
"Work is never-ending." Susan cautiously shook Ray's arm. "Ray, can we not change the plan?"
Ray didn't respond, but Susan knew his temperament. When he didn't speak, it meant there was no point in continuing the conversation.
The engagement was likely to be shelved.
Because of this, Susan went to Nicholas and threw a fit. When Ray returned to Rexonia, Nicholas didn't let Susan go back with him.
By the time he got back to the branch of EX Corporation, it was already very late.
Joshua glanced at the time. "Mr. Price, why don't we head straight back to the apartment? It's so late; there probably isn't anyone left at the office."
"Let's take a look," Ray said.
Joshua quickly followed with small steps. Only a few lights were on in the office; it was the end of the month, so some departments were likely working overtime.
Ray stepped into his office, turned on his computer, and started searching for the images that haunted his dreams. Why had he washed ashore? What was up with the gunshot wounds on his body? Who was he, really? Where did he come from? Nicholas had erased all traces of his past.
Ray could only seek answers from his dreams, but they never gave him any clarity.
He had seen countless doctors to try to recover his memory, but they all said the same thing: leave it to fate. Maybe one day, if he was lucky, he'd remember.
The inability to recover his memory meant his previous life had completely vanished, and he had become a puppet named Ray Price, which wasn't what he wanted.
Despite Nicholas having people secretly watch him, Ray still found a local contact named Eli, who only cared about money, not people.
If the money was right, Eli could even find the President's mistress. Ray hired him to counter Nicholas. Nicholas probably never imagined that Ray would investigate him.
Eli, being very efficient, quickly gathered everything about Nicholas, copied it onto a USB drive, and handed it to Ray. The information was fascinating, far beyond Ray's imagination.
Joshua walked into the break room to make Ray a cup of freshly ground coffee, only to find someone eating noodles in the corner. Upon closer inspection, it was Isabella.
"Why are you still here?" Joshua asked.
Isabella looked up, surprised. "You guys are back?"
"Just got back. You should head home; it's so late," Joshua said.
Isabella took another bite of her noodles. "I'll go home after I finish these noodles."
"Why are you staying so late?" he asked.
"There's a difficult document I need for tomorrow, so I have to work overtime," Isabella said, feeling a bit aggrieved.
"Did you finish it?"
"Yes."
After making the coffee, Joshua went to Ray's office and handed him the cup. "Mr. Price, it's getting late. Why don't you go home and rest?"
"Got it. You can go home first," Ray said.
"Okay."
When Isabella finished packing up and was ready to go home, she noticed the lights in the CEO's office were already off.
She locked the door and turned off the lights. She glanced at the time; it was already past nine. She wondered if there would be any overtime pay.
Standing at the company entrance, Isabella tried to hail a cab. A red Bugatti slowly stopped in front of her. Isabella took a few steps back defensively.
The window rolled down, revealing Ray's face. "What are you doing here?"
"Trying to get a cab," Isabella said.
"It's so late; there won't be any cabs. Get in," Ray said, pushing open the passenger door.
Isabella didn't want to take his car and was about to refuse when Ray spoke calmly. "At this hour, it's not safe for a woman to be standing on the street."
Thinking it over, Isabella bent down and got into the car. "Thank you."
She gave her home address. The car sped off, and she quickly fastened her seatbelt. "Can you drive a bit slower? There's a pregnant woman in your passenger seat."
'George used to drive, but he was never this reckless. Why has he become so impatient?' Isabella thought.
"Do you live alone?" Ray asked casually.
"I live with a friend," Isabella replied.
"Boyfriend?"
"A female friend."
Ray raised an eyebrow, seemingly not believing her.
Isabella didn't mind and asked, "What about you? Do you live alone or with friends?"
"Depends on my mood," he said.
'What does that mean?' she thought.
"So, does that mean if you're in a good mood, you'll live with many friends?" she said.
